An exceptional collaboration with technical experts in the multifaceted field of acoustics has resulted in one of the nation’s premier live recording studios. The technical complexities of electrical, mechanical and isolation systems were seamlessly integrated into a morphology that is a direct interpretation of how sound operates in an optimal condition.

Material investigations into a binary diffusive acoustical panel have become the first implementation of a wall system of this type. The operation of isolated and quiet systems brings an invaluable level of experience to the design team.

The nature of the recording studio is one of isolation, both figuratively and physically. Three major wrappings (Control, Isolation, and Dispersion) have been introduced into the existing structure to address both the isolation and sound quality needs. Two smaller insertions (the vocal isolation booth and the courtyard) create focused moments in the project, pieces that address the quality of the space aside from the technical sound needs.

The architectural interventions do not extend past the edges of found object – they are completely contained by the container. There is little to no indication upon approach to the project of the internal interventions that create the functional spaces.

The existing elevation has been maintained but the building effectively turns itself inside out. The event room, the first room entered, is a large multi-function room. It is conceived as a conceptual exterior space. The true front elevation and major enterance threshold is approached only after stepping through the initial skin of the existing entrance.

The event space is an interstitial space, non-programmed and transitional. From this volume, the core of the studio can be accesed through a significant threshold which occupies the same location as the present masonry wall. Light floods into this space from the erosion of the walls surrounding the courtyard.

Zaha Hadid Architects have completed this school that bridges a running track in Brixton, south London.

Designed for ARK Education, The Evelyn Grace Academy is organised into four smaller schools that share outdoor spaces and facilities.

The building zig-zags across the site with sports fields tucked between it and the roads on both sides.

Classrooms are organised along wide corridors with occasional double-height halls.

The Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton, London Borough of Lambeth, broadens not only the educational diversity of this active and historical part of London but also augments the built environment in a predominantly residential area.

This Academy presents itself as an open, transparent and welcoming addition to the community’s local urban regeneration process.

The strategic location of the site within two main residential arteries naturally lends the built form to be coherent in formation.

The building assumes a strong urban character and identity which is legible to both the local and neighbouring zones.

It offers a learning environment that is spatially reassuring thereby being able to engage the students actively.

The design of the building proffers that, which contemporary architecture can, to create a healthy atmosphere as a milieu for progressive teaching routines.

In keeping with the educational ideology of ‘schools-within-schools’ the design is to creates natural segregation patterns nested within highly functional spaces which give each of the four smaller schools a distinct identity, both internally and externally.

These spaces present generous environs with maximum levels of natural light, ventilation and understated but durable textures.

The collective spaces – shared by all the schools – are planned to encourage social communication within a distinct hierarchy of natural aggregation nodes which weave together the extensive accommodation schedule.

Similarly, the external shared spaces, in order to generate a setting that encourages interaction, are treated in a manner of layering creating informal social and teaching spaces at various levels based on the convergence of multiple functions.

COMPETITION

The project for the Tamina thermal baths is the result of a two-stage competition from 2003. The aim of the first phase of the process was to coordinate the large pending architectural interventions in terms of town planning.

Where should the new five-star hotel be located, where should the extension of the medical centre be set, and how should the new public thermal baths be accessed from the site? The plan was to invest and coordinate a total of SFr. 160 million in new constructions and structural alterations.

The second part of the competition involved designing the project’s two major new constructions – the hotel and the thermal baths. The architectural office Smolenicky & Partner won the project for the Tamina thermal baths, Hilmer & Sattler and Albrecht Architects the project for the new hotel.

LANDSCAPE SITUATION

The town-planning character of the resort is dominated by large representative buildings set in an expansive park landscape. To this extent the resort clearly distinguishes itself from the identity of the village of Bad Ragaz. During the belle époque this principle of building monumental hotels in close vicinity to a village was successfully applied to a number of locations in the Swiss Alps. The most important examples are Interlaken, St. Moritz and Gstaad. In Bad Ragaz two cul-de-sacs fork off from the main road that runs through the golf course connecting Bad Ragaz and Maienfeld. In the new project the thermal baths were deliberately located on the cul-de-sac accessing the resort’s public facilities, such as the new conference centre in the renovated spa spring hall, the casino and the golf club house. The second cul-de-sac running along the park has been kept free to provide access to the three grand hotels, and emits a more private and calmer atmosphere.

FORM AND EXTERIOR SPACE

Instead of being freestanding, the form of the building volume emerges from the enclosing of exterior spaces. In the area of the open-air baths, for instance, the volume of the building is stepped back and opens out the sunbathing lawn to the wooded slopes of the mountain ridge. The view extends past the existing buildings, screened by newly planted groups of trees. The guests experience a park landscape that melts into woods and mountain slopes.

The predominant landscaped, park-like atmosphere remains intact despite the compact manner of building. Thus the resort remains characterized by its park. The main entrance to the thermal baths, the spa spring hall, is set on the visual axis of the cul-de-sac in order, from the main road, to mark its presence in the depth of the site as a public facility.

CRITERIA OF THE BUILDING

The Tamina thermal baths is explicitly conceived as a part of the grand-hotel culture. The cultural and aesthetic identity of the project seeks an affinity to both Swiss tradition and the grand hotels of the Baltic coast, such as Heiligendamm.

For this reason the building volume has a monumental character, in order to stand out as an institution equal to the other buildings in the resort. Simultaneously the thermal baths are intended to relativize the almost “urban” stonework character of the spa spring hall. This explains the snow-white woodwork of the thermal baths, lending it the pavilion-like character of the architecture of a historical holiday resort.

This strategy of using an explicit resort architecture is underscored in the building’s formally fanciful oval windows. Seen from the inside, the windows have the effect of over-dimensional picture frames.

Oval picture frames were widespread in the Victorian era for landscape scenes, whereby the intention in the current project is to give specific expression to the view over the relatively neutral landscape by means of the gesture of the frame.

INTERIOR SPACE AS A “FOREST”

Metaphorically the creation of the interior spaces of the project has an analogy in cutting clearings in the pattern of a forest by felling individual trees. This is the reverse of the common design process.

The exterior spaces are similarly created by “felling” supports on the periphery of the building volume. Structurally the building can be more or less seen as a forest, created out of columns instead of trees – a total of 115 supports using the timber of 2,200 fir-trees (this amount of wood is regenerated in Switzerland in two-and-a-half hours).

EXPRESSION AND MATERIAL

Materially the project possesses the same appearance internally and externally.

The snow-white timber battens are carried over internally as wall surfacing.

In this sense there is no actual interior architecture to the building, but instead only a whole architecture of the building.

The timber structure of the building is not merely determined by the criteria of the span of the supports.

Instead of a focus on the engineering of the function of the supports and the reinforcement of a construction, the structure concentrates far more on spatial phenomena, creating a beauty and a ceremonial atmosphere. Bathing is celebrated as a cultivated activity.

Called The Club, the monochrome Singapore hotel features undulating folds of fabric hanging from the ceiling and black illustrations of plants and trees.

The designers poke fun at a statue of Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles, British statesman and founder of Singapore, by obscuring it’s head with the fabric.

The Club is Ministry of Design’s latest high design boutique hotel offering in the uber chic Club Street conservation area with 22 distinctly unique rooms, a rooftop skybar with alfresco deck and a destination F&B venue with a tapas bar on the ground floor.

Conceptualizing The Club’s branding, MOD has orchestrated a unified design vision to all related collateral, signage and spatial environments. Targeted at the design and lifestyle savvy global nomad, The Club’s blend of sophisticated and comfortable design is at once distinctly local as it is cutting edge global.

Colin Seah, Design Director says, “Searching to ground the hotel in the context of Singapore as well as the historically rich conservation area of Club Street and Ann Siang Hill, we drew its inspiration from 2 sources.” “The first is Singapore’s colonial past, which we have made modern tongue-in-cheek references to through art installation like features such as an larger-than-life statue of Raffles with his head in the clouds as well as through some key furniture pieces and artifacts.

The second inspiration was drawn from the area’s popularity as a remittance center for turn of the century Chinese immigrants where hard earned money and wistful letters were sent back to the homeland. We have taken the memories of these exchanges and created features that hint of this legacy in the rooms of The Club, where the modern day nomad and the nomad of yesterday cross paths for a moment.” All rooms combine traditional colonial design inspired elements together with sleek modern detailing, attitude and creature comforts – creating a colonial chic aesthetic.

Unique layouts together with tailored artwork in each room make each of the 22 rooms distinct. MOD designed the artwork and famed local artist Wynlyn Tan implemented them in the hotel. Guests have the option of checking in at the ground level lobby or at the panoramic roof top Sky Bar, overlooking the Club Street conservation area and CBD. F&B areas designed by Jane Yeo include Lobby Lounge, Tapas Bar, and 2 private function rooms.

The Limes Hotel by Argentinian designer Alexander Lotersztain opened at the end of last month in Brisbane, Australia.

The hotel incorporates a roof-top bar and cinema and is the first Australian hotel to join the Design Hotels organisation.

Designed by award-winning designer, Alexander Lotersztain, the first Australian member of Design Hotels, the Limes Hotel, opened June 27 in Brisbane.

Located in Fortitude Valley, the hub of Brisbane’s nightlife, also known for its trendy cafes, shops, bars and restaurants, in keeping with this vibrant neighbourhood, Limes has been created to include a completely open air roof top bar and roof top cinema (in hibernation until Spring).

Drawing inspiration from a lifetime of international travel, with countless hours spent in aeroplanes and hotel rooms, Alexander concentrated his design focus on the 21 rooms to cater for the independent traveller, rejecting the 5-star norms and opting to focus on guests’ primary travel requirements through unique design solutions in styled lodgings.

“Attention to detail is reflected in my design choices, which are understated yet buzzing with the contemporary energy of Brisbane and the Valley surrounds,” Alexander said.

The rooms feature custom Corian (by Dupont) kitchen benches and toilette vanities, Blackbutt timber bed heads, custom powder coat aluminium door handles, splash-back and floating bedside tables, Luna Textiles curtains and bathroom wall tiles by Bisazza. Each room has an individually hand painted feature wall created by using a mineral coating technique (Julien Fantone, Idea Creations).

“The Limes concept is an emphasis on the essentials to make a pleasing and at times novel experience, whether staying for a night, a drink, a movie or all of the above,” Alexander said.

Where design permitted, mundane items such as rubbish bins and cables are minimised or completely hidden. This not only makes the room look cleaner and visually clearer, but also from a practical aspect, makes the servicing of the room more efficient.

“I wanted to make Limes a design experience, however stripped of the associated design ideals of something unattainable. I shifted the design focus to make the guest feel special, yet not afraid of jumping into the bed like it was their own.”

Limes is a stunning yet simple urban retreat, and throughout all facets of the hotel from the rooms to the roof top bar and cinema, Alexander has created a modern and warm atmosphere unencumbered by excessive ornamentation.

“I decided to view the hotel in its absolute entirety – considering the intended look and feel, and paying heavy attention to the interiors, furniture, surfaces and finishes, as well as extending my design influence to Limes’ music and drinks list. I went on to give the Limes a “face” by tangibly branding the hotel through its facade – an extension of the Limes logo on a gross scale. By leaving no facet of the hotel to chance, one feels what I can only describe as the “spirit” of Limes when in its presence. A strong feeling within the doors of Limes and a residual impact realised on returning home.”

The remarkable Charles Jencks and his Highlands Maggie's Centre: a new building type emerges.

Edge of town. A busy road runs past a big hospital. There is a huge Tesco superstore on the other side of the roundabout. You could be anywhere in the UK. Except for two things: the indicators on the local buses sport the evocative name of Culloden, the battle that ended the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion; and some intriguing green spiral shapes have sprouted between the road and the hospital. This is Inverness. As colonised by architecture critic, patron and designer Charles Jencks.

The oval spirals - one of them a building, two of them landscaped mounds - together form the latest "Maggie's Centre", one of a burgeoning chain of support centres for people affected by cancer. The idea for these friendly, useful, non-clinical places came from the eponymous Maggie Keswick, Jencks' wife, as she herself was fighting cancer in the 1990s. Ten years after she died, Maggie's Centres are a proven success. Each is different and some are extraordinary. Charles Jencks is a very rare beast indeed, a private individual whose private loss has turned him into a producer of fine architecture for the public good.

A UK-based American intellectual whose taste for cosmological musing is underpinned by a wry self-deprecation, he hob-nobs with the architects he commissions. Zaha Hadid is doing the next one, in Fife. She, plus Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers are the big names Jencks has signed up through the Maggie's organisation, which is now expanding out of Scotland into London, Oxford, Cheltenham and Cambridge. The completion of Gehry's centre in Dundee in 2003 - his first British building - suddenly put the Maggie's concept on the international map. Hadid's will be her first British building. But the global names are not the whole story. The first Maggie's in 1996 was a stable building converted by Edinburgh architect Richard Murphy. This latest one in the Highlands is by Glasgow architects Page and Park, their second. You can just see them sweating blood to cut it with the international elite.

You don't often get the chance to design an upwardly-spiralling building, a mini-Guggenheim. David Page is happy to admit that Jencks allowed him into a world of larger possibilities than usual. Moreover, the two collaborated. Jencks, who has established a reputation as a land artist, did the landscape here. Those familiar with his famous "garden of cosmic speculation", designed with Maggie at Portrack House in Scotland, will recognise the hand at work here: symbolic mounds and patterns cut into the grass. In this case the metaphor being employed is of the division of cells and the way that cells exchange information with each other. Jencks also had an influence on the design of the building itself, working with Page to develop a place where architecture and landscape are all part of the same overall composition. The lenticular shape of the building, its stepped green-copper flanks, relate directly to Jencks' hillocks with their paths lazily looping up to contemplative seats on top.

It's the opposite of Gehry's effort at Dundee. That one was all about maximising the tremendous view out over the Firth of Tay. This one is so hemmed in by roads that there are no views at all to speak of. So the place becomes internalised, with its enclosed gardens and series of intriguing internal spaces. So the Jencksian hills are a bit of a perversity in that they lift you out of this zone of tranquillity into full view of the chaotic surroundings. This means they are more to look at than climb up, a glorified screening device. Nor is this the building's only contradiction.

An upwardly-spiralling shape, with the walls sloping outwards like Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Guggenheim in Manhattan, means that upstairs is logically more important than downstairs. Once you have taken in the various interconnecting meeting and sitting areas downstairs, plus the big kitchen that is at the centre of all Maggie's Centres, you want to climb the staircase with its fine stainless-steel balustrade, your gaze led by the timber-lined walls curving up and away. If you do this at Gehry's Dundee example, you find yourself in a look-out tower. Here, you just find yourself in an over-large and slightly claustrophobic upstairs office. True, there's nothing much to look out over, as we've seen. But it still feels like a missed opportunity, in a building that is all about upwards movement.

These, however, are minor cavils. What you get to see as a user of this building is excellent: the flow of it, the play of light, the sense of openness, of new possibilities. It is a friendly space, one obviously special and distinct. Which means that you, if you go there, also feel special and distinct. You are anything but part of a production-line health system. It's casual, domestic, there are no uniforms or medical equipment. Instead, you do all the talking and advice-taking and fact-finding that you can never get in the pressurised world of a big hospital. Which means you feel more in control of what's happening to you.

Page talks about the remarkable difference that outward-canting walls make: this feels a much bigger place than it really is. Architecturally it is striving for importance, and that is right: it is an important place that just happens to be small. Now that Maggie's Centres are rolling out nationally, we can see something remarkable happening. Architecture can certainly reassure, and uplift. Just sometimes, perhaps, it can help to heal as well.

Kew Tree Top Walkway & Rhizotron: Inspired by nature

London Eye architects Marks Barfield’s Rhizotron and Xstrata Tree Top Walkway opens at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew on 24th May for Kew Gardens’ ‘Year of the Tree’. The walkway will take visitors eighteen metres high into the tree canopy for a birds’ eye view of Kew and the opportunity to discover the rich biodiversity of the forest canopy. The ‘Rhizotron’, entered through an apparent crack in the ground, will be the UK’s only walk-in viewing area illustrating the rich world of tree root biology.

Inspired by the nature that surrounds the site, Marks Barfield sought to develop a design rationale that would have a subtle relationship with its natural environment. Julia Barfield, Principal, explains, “we wanted the walkway to be a visually light, discreet presence, at ease in its natural surroundings; while at the same time being unashamedly man-made. In order to minimise the visual impact we decided to integrate the structure with the handrail support and drew on the Fibonacci sequence, which underlies many growth patterns in nature, to establish the setting out of the principal structural elements.”

Project Architect Chris Smiles explains that “by using the progressive series of numbers associated with the sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34, etc), Marks Barfield were able to work with structural engineers Jane Wernick Associates to create a ‘Fibonacci grid’ along a typical walkway truss”. The spacing of the truss diagonals is dictated by the sequence, giving a higher density of elements near the truss ends where the cumulative vertical loads are highest. This principle is used both for the vertical trusses which form the balustrade, and the walkway deck structure which forms a horizontal truss resisting wind.

The walkway is a 200m long string of twelve modular walkway trusses at eighteen metres high, connected by ten circular ‘node’ platforms that provide opportunities for contemplation and interpretation in the form of one metre long cast bronze plaques. A larger, classroom-sized platform at the mid-point of the walkway provides space for school groups of up to 35, and a bench to enable visitors to rest and enjoy longer views towards the Palm House. Access to the walkway is gained by a main stair tower after exiting the Rhizotron; the tower also incorporates a single stage hydraulic lift with a glazed panoramic lift car.

During the design development stages Marks Barfield used Gehry Technologies’ ‘Digital Project’ software to develop the complex structure, allowing the 3d cad model to be efficiently updated parametrically. “The walkway layout went through a number of iterations to achieve the final arrangement, and to make that process easier we applied a system called inverse kinematics to the cad model,” Chris Smiles explains. “This allowed the walkway modules each to be restrained against each other as well as the constraints, namely the trees within the site, operating rather like a piece of gigantic meccano!”

Using Digital Project also smoothed the workflow between Marks Barfield, contractors WS Britland and Steelwork detailers Odda Design, with the exchange of design information efficiently translated through specialist steelwork software Tekla Structures. Thus the design team could check and approve steelwork details using web-based interactive 3d models, with fabrication parts information tagged into each individual element. Given the complex nature of the project, Marks Barfield adopted BIM (Building Information Modelling) software from the very beginning.

One of the major challenges facing the design team was to strike a balance between enabling visitors to get as close as possible to the tree canopies and being mindful of the complex tree marks barfield architects root system below ground and the potential damage to trees. A radar survey was successfully undertaken to understand the extent of tree root activity at the proposed pylon and pile foundation locations. Armed with this detailed information the design team were able to strategically position the 12-18m long concrete piles between the major roots. In addition, so as not to compromise the metre-thick mat of smaller, fibrous roots, Jane Wernick Associates proposed replacing conventional concrete pile caps by much shallower steel grillages. Each pile group is tied together by a welded grillage, each bespoke.

Most of the walkway was pre-fabricated off-site to save time and minimise disruption and on-site welding in what is a very sensitive environment. Each complete pylon was then transported from WS Britland’s fabrication plant at Dover to site, erected, and bolted to the steel grillage. Each walkway module, 12m long and weighing 9 tonnes, was lifted carefully into position and pinned into place using solid stainless steel pins. Kew’s team of tree specialists assisted in manipulating tree branches during construction to facilitate the positioning of the walkway components. In total over 400 tonnes of steel was erected to form the walkway in its entirety.

The supporting structure is expressed throughout, explains Jane Wernick: “the structural form succeeds in reflecting the forces which are applied to it, while remaining elegant and not competing with the natural forms around it.” Dynamic and vibration analysis was carried out to ensure that there would not be resonance of the structure in windy conditions.

Another early decision was to use Weathering Steel for the structure: this high-strength, low-alloy steel rusts over time, forming a protective barrier against oxygen, moisture and contaminants. Its longevity and low maintenance requirements make it ideal and its gritty, robust, beautiful appearance complements its natural surroundings – unlike any man-made paint colour. The steel is only available in plate form, and this generated the faceted, triangular language developed throughout the design. For instance, it allowed the adoption for the supporting pylons of tapering triangular sections, widest at the base where forces are greatest (not dissimilar to a tree).

One fortunate omission following a value engineering exercise was not to shot-blast the steel during the fabrication process, thus leaving a surprisingly natural, ‘bark-like’ texture on the steel pylons where the mill scale is still evident. To complement the steelwork and provide a continuous tactile surface, a laminated sweet chestnut timber capping piece finishes the entire handrail section of the walkway.

Once in the canopy of the fifty mature broad-leaved trees of the Capability Brown designed woodland area, visitors may spot birds such as tawny owls, woodpeckers, kestrels and parakeets, as well as mosses and lichen, insects and bats at dusk. Tony Kirkham, head of RBG Kew’s arboretum and project manager for the Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway project, adds, “as a trained arborist I have had the privilege of being up in the tree canopy; experiencing trees at height and birds and other wildlife from a completely different perspective. It’s fantastic that we are able to give visitors the same experience and we hope it will make them realise that trees matter and we need to nurture them.”

Book Reviews : The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger + Georgina Kincaid Series by Richelle Mead

I can't believe how long I've been neglected this blog. Well, my excuse is good enough, at least I think it is, I have a job now, I need to focus and don't want to ruin my carrier any time soon. End of story.

Well. Let's just skip the whining aside...
Now that I've decided to brush off the dusk, sit in front of my lap top and write once so more. So there must be something special about it right?

How did I come about Audrey Niffenegger's book?

After I've finished Stephenie Meyer's famous series "Twilight" around the end of December 2008 (Whoa, that's pretty long time ago. Time passes by so fast). I felt like I have too much young adult fantasy in my life. They're very good books, definitely, and I also enjoyed the movie version of the series so far. But the majority of books I've been reading lately is all fantasy for children.(Harry Potter, Narnia, Eragon, etc.) Yet, as I much as wanted to switch the subject, I also didn't want to sway out of my path too much because I still love to watch or read fantasy/sci-fi stuffs.

I'd say I grew up in the world of fantasy and imagination. That stuff, somehow, became the part of myself and who I am inside.

So I've decided to move onto more of a love story with a bit of fantasy. I've spent a lot of hours wandering in Kinokuniya (a large English book store at Siam Paragon - probably the biggest in Bangkok) searching for a book I wanted. I found Audrey Niffenegger's "The Time's Traveler's Wife" interesting. So I went back home and did some little research on the internet for the reviews and made up my mind(It's funny but I never found out it was going to be a movie at that time until I've finished the book). I wanted to read it so bad I can't wait until the next time I get to the store.

Henry and Claire in the movie, portrayed by Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. A perfect couple in a struggling paranormal married life.

The result is fascinating. The book is pretty good. Henry, one of the main character, who suffered from chronological illness, can't control his current time and space and always disappear into the past or the future without warning. However, no matter how much pain he suffered and how messy his life in time is, his world usually goes around the one-and-only love of his life, Claire. The way the two characters get to know each other is warming and bittersweet.

I easily grew fond of those two more and more every time I flipped onto the next page. Because of Henry is a time traveler, he always knows ahead of what will happen in his and Claire's lives but what's amazing in this story is HOW it actually happen. I felt surprise each time when the writer slowly reveals the plot little by little. Although, the book has a bit of heart broken at the end, but the story wrapped itself up so nicely. It easily becoming one of my all-time favorites and stood so proudly in my bookshelf until now.

Rating: 5 Stars

Strong point: Strong plot and refreshing ways to tell stories and an unexpected ending. A must read.

With a gigantic screen behind him showing scenes from a horror movie starring himself, Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, kicked off the evening set with 3 A.M., a song from this year's album, Relapse. Eminem, 37, was a headliner at the three-day, five-stage music festival this weekend that also features Jane's Addiction, Flaming Lips, Lenny Kravitz and KISS.

Friday's crowd roared with approval as Eminem rekindled past hits, such as Business and Square Dance, in his signature rapid-fire rap. A full rock band accompanied him on stage, all members dressed in skeleton outfits.

"Hey New Orleans, I'm back y'all. Did you miss me?" he said to an eruption of cheers. "I missed you, too."

Eminem has kept a reclusive, non-touring life the past several years, as he battled an addiction to prescription painkillers. Friday marked his first concert in five years and his only live performance of the year. There's a history here: Eminem played the festival, known locally as Voodoo Fest, in 2000, just as his first album, The Slim Shady LP, was catapulting him to stardom, said Steve Rehage, a New Orleans native who founded Voodoo Fest in 1999.

Voodoo organizers reached out to Eminem again this year and were surprised when he readily agreed to perform. "It was a really fast, quick and easy negotiation," Rehage said.

Concertgoers on Friday endured heavy rains and dropping temperatures as storms passed over the outdoor festival earlier in the evening. But soggy spectators lined up by the thousands to see Eminem's 75-minute show.

"Everything I expected," said Ian Robert, 22, of New Orleans, under a soaked poncho. "It was definitely worth standing in the rain and the cold.

Eminem toggled between recent creations, such as We Made You, and older favorites, such as Kill You, Cleaning Out My Closet, Superman and The Real Slim Shady. Lighters came out when he performed Stan, the ballad-like song that uses a sample from singer Dido and describes a stalking fan. And a sea of arms waved back and forth as he spat out Like Toy Soldiers.

Midway through the show, Eminem brought out D12, the Detroit rappers collective he's associated with, rapping to hits with them such as My Band and Purple Pills.

Eminem hinted at his newfound sobriety while joking with members of D12 onstage, reminiscing about taking drugs in Amsterdam. "Remember when I used to get (high)?" he said. He then led into Under the Influence, a whimsical rap about popping pills and performing while high.

Eminem's reach was evident Friday night, as teen spectators mingled with older fans, many of whom knew the words to each song. Eva SantaCruz, 43, said she began listening to Eminem after borrowing one of his CDs from her teenage daughter. She drove more than six hours Friday morning from Little Rock, to catch the show, she said.

"He's awesome," SantaCruz said. "There's no way I was going to miss this."

Many fans wandered away toward the end of his show but rushed back for the encore: Lose Yourself, the Academy-Award-winning song that was part of the 8 Mile soundtrack.

"Better than I expected," said Cami Munson, 19, of New Iberia, La. "It's good to have him back."

Eminem, Misogyny, and the Sounds of Silence

Eminem is back and once again looming large over the pop cultural landscape. On the occasion of the release of his new album, Relapse, his full-length, full-color image appears literally larger than life on billboards in major cities from New York to Los Angeles, not to mention cities all over the world. Although the album itself has received mixed reviews, the elite arbiters of cultural taste and artistic merit have given the rapper's return the red carpet treatment.

The New York Times ran a giant photo and story on the front of its Sunday Arts and Leisure section on May 24. Entertainment Weekly featured the 36-year-old on the cover of its summer music preview issue; Time magazine devoted two pages of its June 1 issue to a review of his album and discussion about the state of his life and career. Of course the online universe is also abuzz; at the time of this writing, a Google search with the words Eminem and relapse returned 2.7 million hits.

Despite a five-year hiatus, there is no doubt that Eminem remains a popular artist. Relapse debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 608,000 units in its first week of release.

For those of us who had hoped that his cultural moment had passed, the return of Eminem forces us to confront the disturbing reality that our society remains in deep denial about misogyny and its myriad manifestations in the art and commerce of everyday life. Misogyny (the hatred of women) in rap preceded Eminem and has thrived in his absence. And in fairness, the fact that he is white makes it easier for this writer and other whites to criticize him than it is to call out Black artists whose work is similarly sexist and oppressive. These racial dynamics are important issues to examine in another time and place.

Nonetheless, the evidence of our culture's unwillingness to address the reality and ubiquity of men's violence against women is not merely contained in the lyrics on Eminem's new album, which when they're not exploring the depths to which the artist's drug addiction had taken him, characteristically communicate a deep contempt for women and a violent rage at them. This unwillingness is most clearly seen in the music reviews and overall media coverage of the rapper's comeback.

It is not what they say that is cause for concern, but what they studiously avoid. With a few notable exceptions, such as Alan Ranta on the web site Pop Matters calling Relapse "chauvinistic hate-speech," the high priests of cultural criticism in the journalistic mainstream seem to have decided that Eminem's virulent misogyny is no longer even worthy of a mention, much less an appropriate subject of extended commentary and critique. Is it truly possible that women's lives have been so thoroughly devalued that a multi-platinum musical artist with nine Grammy awards to his name can sing multiple songs about raping and mutilating women and hip sophisticates can't even bring themselves to utter the words "woman-hating?"

It is as if critics have decided that 1) there is (still) nothing wrong with one of the most celebrated musical artists in the world devoting multiple songs to verbal attacks on women and girls, as long as there's a catchy beat and the content is rationalized as "dark comedy," or 2) homicidal misogyny has become so commonplace in entertainment media that there is no further need to discuss it.

A survey of recent articles about Eminem in several major media outlets yields plenty of lines like "a stunning return to form from the man who is arguably rap's most talented lyricist," (Entertainment Weekly), but a near-absence of criticism directed at Eminem or Interscope/Universal Music Group for releasing an album with lyrics like the following from the song "Stay Wide Awake":

No thoughtful person would argue that music lyrics themselves cause men to be violent; that is the sort of simplistic argument which defenders of Eminem and other misogynous rappers and rockers raise and then ridicule whenever anyone mentions the possible "real world" effects of artistic portrayals. But just as it is reductive and problematic to draw a causal link between lyrics and actual behavior, it is similarly nonsensical to deny that the production and reception of art always has a social dimension. Popular art succeeds, at least commercially, precisely because it resonates with a certain audience - for whatever reason - in a given cultural and historical context.

In discussions of Eminem's choice to feature on his comeback album a number of songs that explore the sadism of his misogynous serial killer alter ego, Slim Shady, is it not relevant to mention the ongoing pandemic of men's violence against women, including the outrage of serial murder? Is it not relevant to ask why some men are so angry at women that they would derive a twisted sort of pleasure from singing along with a first-person narrator (Slim Shady) who delights in terrifying, degrading, raping and murdering them?

In addition to his predilection for writing "comic" lyrics in the voice of a serial murderer, Eminem continues to find lyrically inventive ways to joke about raping women by shoving objects into their bodies, like in the lyrics above, or in the song "3 a.m.," where he casually raps about inserting "...a flashlight up Kim Kardashian's ass." This is in a country - ours - where one out of six women will be the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. And while the reality of rape is not funny anywhere, the global reach of the U.S. entertainment industry means that boys and men can listen and laugh along to Eminem's songs in countries where the rape and mutilation of women and girls are even more common and less socially stigmatized than they are here.

Consider the tragic case of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the rape and murder of women are beyond pandemic and are closer in scope to genocide. For years Dr. Denis Mukwege, a gynecologist, has operated daily on dozens of women and girls as young as two and three-years-old whose insides have been ripped apart by men who brutally gang rape them, shove sticks and bottles into their vaginas, and sadistically mutilate their sexual organs in unimaginable ways, causing the ones who survive a lifetime of excruciating pain, incontinence, disease and loneliness. In a New York Times article in 2007 Dr. Mukwege said "We don't know why these rapes are happening, but one thing is clear. They are done to destroy women."

Is it going too far to suggest that when wealthy nations such as ours export music by the likes of Eminem to countries with that level of misogynous violence that we are practicing what might be considered a particularly insidious form of cultural imperialism?

Defenders of world-famous artists like Eminem would surely rush in to say: Eminem is not responsible for these unspeakable outrages! He is an artist! Of course. But is it unreasonable to suggest that when Eminem jokes about sticking umbrellas up women's vaginas that one effect might be that it helps to desensitize his male (and even female) fans across the globe to the humanity and suffering of women? Desensitization is one of the key effects of exposure to violence, both in media and real life. An Alternet article entitled "Torture Chic: Why Is the Media Glorifying Inhumane, Sadistic Behavior?," suggests that the increasing presence of torture in entertainment media, such as on the hit TV series 24, has helped to desensitize Americans to real torture done in our name, such as in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.

The silence of mainstream music critics on the possible societal effects of misogyny in popular music has been deafening. If an artist's job is sometimes to be provocative and push boundaries, isn't it a critic's job at the very least to ask questions like: What does it say about our culture that Eminem's lyrics resonate with millions of American men, and even many women? How can we discern the difference between artistic revelation and crass exploitation in Marshall Mathers' art? Does his vaunted lyrical virtuosity provide us with any insight into the larger belief systems - along with individual motivations --- that lie behind men's sexualized brutality toward women? Is he a brilliant artist exploring important artistic terrain, or is he merely going for cheap voyeuristic thrills at the expense of women, knowing full well that no one will hold him - or his record company -- accountable?

One piece of circumstantial evidence for the latter view is provided by Jon Pareles in The New York Times, who explains the process Eminem and his collaborators went through in deciding how to position his comeback:

"Both Eminem and Dr. Dre thought hard about how Eminem should re-emerge. And both concluded the world wanted more Slim Shady. 'I talked to my son about it,' said Dr. Dre, 'and he was like: 'The kids want to hear him act the fool. We want to hear him be crazy, we want to hear him be Slim Shady and nothing else.' "

The tone of at least some of the coverage this time suggests there are a few authoritative voices in music criticism and commentary who have moved beyond the adulatory groupthink that characterized much writing about Eminem back in his heyday earlier this decade. In those headier days, when Eminem was both lionized and criticized for being the "Hip-Hop Elvis," many in the cognoscenti actively sought to rationalize Eminem's murderous lyrical misogyny and homophobia by claiming that the "Slim Shady" character Marshall Mathers hid behind was a creative fictional construct through which the artist sought to explore taboo topics with lyrical dexterity over an infectious beat produced by Dr. Dre. If you didn't get the joke or appreciate the humor, it was because you were too dense or politically correct to appreciate the brilliant artistry at play.

But at least some writers seem to have grown tired of parroting the debatable (and profitable) premise that Eminem is a major artist with important things to say. In one of the most dismissive pieces I reviewed, Josh Tyrangiel in Time magazine ridicules Eminem's attempt to regain the title of America's Most Outrageous:

"Half of Relapse - the aggressively dull and stupid half - is devoted to re-establishing Eminem as a man so unhinged, he's capable of anything or at least fantasizing about anything.... By the middle of the first song, '3 a.m.,' Eminem, or one of his multiple alter egos, has masturbated to Hannah Montana and left a pile of bodies behind the counter of a McDonald's....On 'Medicine Ball' he promises to rape the Pussycat Dolls and spits out a couplet of abuse for Madonna and Rihanna, while 'Same Song and Dance' has him raping Lindsay Lohan in one verse and Britney Spears in the next. Suffice it to say that many more rapes occur and I stopped taking notes. "

The corporate media have played a crucial role in Eminem's highly lucrative career in part by defining the parameters of how he can be criticized. As Jon Pareles writes in The New York Times, Eminem "quickly became an offensive scourge to those who took Shady's fantasies literally, or worried that others might." Note the narrow range of possibilities the writer offers to describe those who might be "offended" by Eminem's art. Conveniently left out are Eminem's detractors who possess a more complex understanding of the effects of violent, misogynous lyrics than whether or not people (men) take them literally.

Another distortion about Eminem and his detractors that many music critics have turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy is the idea that resistance is futile, because Marshall Mathers is just too clever. Pareles writes that when combined with Eminem's murderous lyrics, the "bouncy beat and singsong choruses of kiddie music" that characterize Dr. Dre's production constituted a "smiley-faced nastiness (that) was enough to make Eminem a target for the censorious, which in turn gave him a new bunch of antagonists to provoke."

So people who are concerned about the ongoing pandemic of men's violence against women -- including thousands of domestic violence and sexual assault advocates and educators - are "censorious" if they have a problem with lyrics that normalize and find humor in (fictional) rapists' misogynist fantasies of brutality and degradation? Pareles quotes Eminem's response to (unspecified) criticisms of his work with yet another non sequitir: "I didn't get in this game to be a role model." As if criticism of his artistic contributions necessarily implies such an unsophisticated understanding of the social functions of art.

Many of the same people who defend Eminem and dismiss his feminist and gay rights critics are white people - including good liberals and progressives -- who long ago accepted the idea that racist depictions in media play an important ideological role in perpetuating racism, not because whites will go out and imitate the behavior of fictional racist characters, but because the institutional structures of racism require ideological and cultural apparati to sustain them.

It takes no great leap of logic to see that sexism works in the same way. One need not argue that boys and men who listen to Eminem will become rapist-murderers in order to maintain that misogynous music and lyrics play an important role in legitimating men's mistreatment of women by making it culturally acceptable and even "cool" for men to express sexist rage against women and then hide behind the pretense that "it's only a joke" if anyone takes it too seriously. That argument has long been discredited when it comes to racism. What's the difference when the oppression in question is sexism, or heterosexism?

For women and men who work in the trenches of the sexual and domestic violence fields, and see daily the brutal results of male socialization played out on the bodies of girls and women (and other men), bearing witness to the continued success of Eminem, Inc. can be an emotionally excruciating experience. I know plenty of people who would prefer to crawl under the covers and pretend that none of this is really happening.

But those of us who take seriously the feminist idea that rapists teach us something about the society that produced them have no choice but to pay attention to Eminem -- both the content and context of his art, and how critics and others describe and make sense of it. With rare exceptions, men who rape are not anomalous monsters. They are products of their socialization and the deeply misogynist norms that prevail in their societies. In the long term, the only way to reduce dramatically the incidence of men's violence against women is to change the social norms that help to produce abusive men - which includes critically examining what sort of art we choose to celebrate, and why.

In domestic violence advocacy, there is a term used to describe a situation where people contribute to an abusive man's behavior by their conscious actions, by their minimization of his crimes, or by their silence. It is called "colluding with the batterer." It is hard to avoid the conclusion that a society where radio stations continue to play Eminem's records, people continue to buy them, and critics continue to write about them while leaving out any condemnation of their vicious sexism, is a society that is in profound collusion with the batterer.

50 Cent: He didn’t know everyone who was on the record. And it was remixed, they remixed his vocals. When I make records with Em, Dre mixes my vocals in the beat, then sends the beat, and Em sends his vocals until it sounds the way he wants it. Then we wrap it up. So he did his verse on the actual song, they moved it around, put other people on and he didn’t even mix his vocals back yet.

Complex: He didn’t like that?

Before they said a word, the crowd started buzzing and clapping (especially among press row), because anyone with a semblance of Hip-Hop awareness knew what was about to go down.

Mos started first, and ripped it with a verse showcasing veneration for Islam and its offshoots like the Nation of Gods and Earths. Midway, Mos started going back and forth between traditional rhyme schemes and the Jamaican toasting that originated Hip-Hop, eliciting claps from the audience. Black Thought went in next, and brought his usual rapid-fire, flawless flow. He spit longer than Mos, and got the crowd even more engaged as Eminem stood next to him nodding and taking in the bars. The crowd buzzed anytime Em appeared on screen, no doubt anticipating a great closer as each emcee’s verses built further anticipation.

People have marveled at Eminem’s verse of “Forever.” It you were impressed with that, just make sure to tune into this award show. I gave up trying to write down what he was saying because the flow was too nasty and fast for my hand, but I can verify the crowd went crazy when he brought an assonance heavy rhyme scheme that brought together several Arabic names to highlight how he was mixture of several figures like Barack Obama and Saddam Hussein. Honestly, once he finished the show could’ve ended right there."
